Understanding Omega-3 fatty acids or PUFA's.
Omega-3 fatty acids also called PUFA's for polyunsaturated fatty acids are essential fatty acids. They are essential to human health but cannot be manufactured by the body because the human body cannot insert the double bond at the third position on the carbon chain. Because we cannot make 18 chain omega-3 fatty acids and we are not good as humans at elongating 18 chain acids to 20 chain acids, EPA or 22 chain DHA, Omega-3 fatty acids must be obtained from our food. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish, but the fish must be cold-water fish and fed on a diet of either phytoplankton that create the omega-3 or other fish. Omega-3 is in fish such as salmon, tuna, and halibut, other marine life such as algae and krill (krill is an animal), certain plants such as chia and purslane and nut oils.
These Omega-3 or polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA's), omega-3 fatty acids are essential building blocks of our health and important in the functioning of our cells. They play an essential role in brain function as well as normal growth and development.
The American Heart Association recommends eating cold-water fatty fish such as mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and salmon at least 2 times a week.
However many states advise that child bearing women, pregnant women and mothers, nursing mothers, young children, and women who might become pregnant not eat larger fish from polluted North Atlantic waters including swordfish, shark, and king mackerel. Even albacore tuna, salmon, and herring can have mercury and the quality should be considered.
ALA, EPA and DHA, the Three Main Omega-3 fatty acids
There are three major types of omega 3 fatty acids that are referred to alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic or eicosapentanoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Once eaten, the body converts a small amount of ALA to EPA and DHA, but only in about 8 % of people can make this conversion and women are better than men at this conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA.
EPA and DHA are the omega-3 fatty acids most importantly required by the body for cellular function. Research continues to grow daily with 100 articles or more a month on Omega-3 EPA and DHA and health and disease that indicate that omega-3 fatty acids EPA and to some extent DHA reduce inflammation and help prevent risk factors associated with chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, depression, cancer, vision loss, and arthritis.
These essential fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain and appear to be particularly important for cognitive (brain memory and performance) and behavioral function and recent studies have shown increased reading and math scores on Omega-3 supplements in children.
